Enjoying a strawberry daiquiri with vanilla ice cream and a straw

Happy weekend, my friend! Speaking of weekends, how do you usually spend it? Well, a typical weekend for us is backyard grilling with a couple of refreshing drinks.

And if you’re like me, who stocks up on fresh strawberries before they go out of season, here’s what you can make with them, frozen strawberry daiquiris. 😍

I’ve already mentioned that I’m not the alcohol type, but this one is right up my alley. A good frozen strawberry daiquiri recipe has served hubby and me well on many of our Friday Netflix nights.

Margarita vs. Daiquiri

Daiquiris and margaritas are both tropical cocktails I adore. But I have to say that the strawberry daiquiri is my favorite cocktail so far. Ahhh, wait, wait… I’m still deciding between this and my mango margarita.

But what’s really the difference between a margarita and a daiquiri?

First off, frozen daiquiris use a rum and fresh lime juice combo, while margaritas use lime juice, tequila, and triple sec (an orange liqueur). Second, you serve a margarita in a special margarita glass instead of the cocktail glass for a daiquiri. And lastly, the margarita glass is rimmed with salt, while daiquiris aren’t.

Strawberry Daiquiri Ingredients

Daiquiris usually enjoy a mix of rum, citrus juice, and sugar (or another sweetener). And the most popular is, of course, a strawberry daiquiri. It’s SUPER EASY with only 6 ingredients:

  1. White Rum – Booze it up without dulling the bright red from the strawberries. Light rum is also sweeter, while dark rum is better if you want to drink it straight or with Coke.
  2. Frozen Strawberries  Yes, you can use fresh if you want, but frozen is available year-round and reduces the need for as many ice cubes.
  3. Lime Juice – The citrus zing from fresh lime juice takes daiquiris over the top.
  4. Ice Cubes – Crushed for a frozen daiquiri, but you can also serve this deliciousness over the rocks. (I won’t tell😉)
  5. White Sugar sweetens this delicacy into the perfect dessert drink.
  6. Ice Cream – Optional, but a must-try for an exquisite dessert. 😋

How to Make a Strawberry Daiquiri

Pureeing all ingredients in the blender

This drink is way easier to make than it sounds.

  • Blend – Simply pour all the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
  • Pour – Then pour it into a serving glass (filling it about ⅓ full), top it with ice cream, finish it off with another layer of strawberry daiquiri mix, and serve. And you could top it with whipped cream.
  • Serve!

So instead of going out for a few drinks, why don’t you make them cheaper at home? And you don’t have to designate a driver. Woohoo!

Pouring a refreshingly cold cocktail

Recipe Variations

  1. Don’t like it slushy? Swap out the frozen strawberries for fresh ones and pour the mix over ice for an on-the-rocks daiquiri.
  2. Want it more fruity? One of my dear readers added some mangoes and pineapples. Tropical drink overload! Go for it if it’s your thing!
  3. Try using apple juice instead of white rum. You’ll love the layering of flavors.
  4. Try other types of frozen berries for a fruity twist. Blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries all go great with rum.

Make-Ahead and Storage Instructions

To make strawberry daiquiris ahead of time, start by blending fresh strawberries, lime juice, sugar, and rum in a blender. Once the daiquiri mix is smooth, pour it into a container (preferably BPA-free plastic) with a tight-fitting lid and store it in the freezer.

When you’re ready to serve, simply take it out of the freezer to thaw for a few minutes. Then give it a quick stir and pour it into glasses. Garnish with fresh strawberries, and enjoy! Making strawberry daiquiris ahead of time is a great timesaver and lets you enjoy a tasty cocktail whenever you want.

FAQs

What kind of rum do you use?

Did you know that daiquiris originated in Cuba, where rum is the king? There are different varieties of rum, but for this recipe, I chose white rum because it’s sweeter than dark rum. I used Bacardi, in case you want to know the brand. But you can also use vodka as a good sub for white rum.

Can you turn it into a non-alcoholic strawberry daiquiri?

Yes, you can. You can enjoy this adult version and serve your kids a virgin daiquiri. Just leave the rum out or replace it with a little lemon-lime soda. They’re gonna love it!

How much alcohol does a daiquiri have?

That’s a loaded question! That depends on how much rum you add. Joking aside, a typical daiquiri has about 20% alcohol, so please drink responsibly.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup (60ml) white rum
  • 2 cups (250g) frozen strawberries (about a pint)
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) lime juice, freshly squeezed
  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • ¼ cup (50g) sugar
  • Ice cream a couple of scoops (optional)

Instructions

  • Add rum, lime juice, sugar, and frozen strawberries in a blender.
  • Blend until smooth and creamy, then pour enough into two serving glasses to fill them about ⅓ full. Then add a scoop or two of ice cream if desired, and pour in another layer of strawberry daiquiri. Add more ice cream and garnish with a strawberry and lime wedge.
  • If using fresh strawberries, blend all the ingredients and serve in a glass.

Tips & Notes:

  1. Frozen strawberries are a good substitute if you don’t have fresh ones. Make sure that they are ripe or sweet enough. However, If they aren’t quite that ripe yet, you may add a little more sugar to amp up the sweetness.
  2. When adding sugar, use the super fine one, which will dissolve instantly in the blender. If you don’t have any, just blend long enough to allow the sugar to dissolve completely.
  3. To adjust the thickness of your frozen daiquiri, you may add as much or as little ice into the blender. For a slushy consistency, you may start by adding 1 cup of ice, then add another ½ cup at a time and pulse to your desired consistency.
  4. You may also adjust the amount of lemon and lime juice for this recipe depending on your preference.
  5. Place a fine strainer over your glass or pitcher as you are straining so as not to include the strawberry chunks and tiny seeds in your drink.
  6. White rum is the perfect choice for a daiquiri as it is sweeter than dark rum, which tends to be rich and mellow. A good sub for a white rum is vodka. Or you may leave it for a virgin version of strawberry daiquiri.
  7. You can customize this drink to your preference. You may add more fruits into it or herbs for an earthy hint to your drink.
  8. Make sure to wash and hull your strawberries properly (removing the green stem) before tossing them into the blender.

    1. You can use cookies and cream ice cream if you want. Chocolate and strawberries are always a nice combo. Though I might be tempted to go for a more tropical flavor.
