A Plateful of Baked Pigs in a Blanket

Why Are They Called Pigs in a Blanket?

Originally, pigs in a blanket were sausages wrapped in bacon. Pork on pork has to be good. Then, the Americans decide to wrap them in croissant or crescent roll dough.

Anything pork, like Vienna sausages, breakfast links, cocktail sausages, etc., wrapped nice and cozy is a pig in a blanket. Versatile, easy, and delicious.

Recipe Ingredients

Who would have thought you could make fancy appetizers with store-bought crescent dough and some sausages?

  1. Honey Mustard Sauce – Mayonnaise, honey, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, and sriracha come together for a dipping sauce for the gods. Garlic butter and BBQ sauce also work if you don’t have the honey mustard ingredients.
  2. Brushing Sauce – Melted butter is an ideal carrier for honey, onion, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, hot sauce, and egg. Brush it on the crescent roll dough before rolling up the sausage for extra decadence.
  3. Crescent Rolls – A store-bought can of crescent roll dough works fine, but homemade crescent rolls take them over the top. 😉
  4. Cocktail Sausage – Your favorite cocktail sausage, mini hotdogs, or Lit’l smokies are amazingly delicious. Get the ones filled with cheese for an even better snacking experience.
  5. Everything Bagel Seasoning – The blend of poppy seeds, sesame seeds, and other seasonings adds crunch and flavor. Have you tried my homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning?

How to Make Pigs in a Blanket

Make the honey mustard sauce
Make the brushing sauce and cut the crescent rolls

Prep Ingredients

  • Mix mayonnaise, honey, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, and sriracha in a small bowl. Thoroughly mix and set aside. (Photos 1-2)
  • Preheat oven to 400ºF/205℃. Prepare the baking or cookie sheet by lining it with parchment paper. Set aside.
  • Combine the butter, honey, onions, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, hot sauce, and eggs. Mix until fully incorporated. (Photo 3)
  • Cut – Open both cans of crescent roll dough. Unroll the dough and put it on a lightly floured surface. Cut along the perforations so you have 16 triangles. Cut each triangle in half lengthwise. Brush with the brushing sauce. (Photos 4-5)
Note: You will have extra dough, but you can brush it with sauce and roll it up for flavorful crescent rolls.

Assemble

  • Place a cocktail sausage at the wide end of the dough triangle and roll it towards the other end to wrap it securely. (Photo 7)
  • Repeat – Place seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat the process until you run out of dough or sausage.
  • Season – Lightly brush pigs in the blanket with more brushing sauce and sprinkle Everything Bagel Seasoning on top. (Photo 8)
  • Bake – Place in the oven and bake according to crescent roll directions or until golden brown, 10-15 minutes.
  • Serve – Let it cool slightly, and serve with the honey mustard sauce.

Recipe Variations

  1. Alternative dough. No crescent roll dough? Roll out biscuit dough into a thin circle, cut it into wedges, and roll up your hotdogs. You could do the same thing with puff pastry.
  2. Cheese-filled. For cheesy goodness, wrap the sausage in a slice of cheese before rolling it up in the crescent dough.
  3. Spicy. Add some heat by using mini red hots.
  4. Vegetarian version. Swap out the sausage for veggie dogs or roasted vegetables like carrot or zucchini sticks.
  5. Breakfast sausage. Swap out the cocktail sausages with min breakfast sausages for a quick and easy breakfast. Drizzle them with maple syrup, and enjoy.
  6. Bacon – Double pork is fabulous. Wrap the sausage in almost crispy bacon, then wrap them in the crescent roll.
  7. Spice it Up – Season these babies with CreoleItalian, or taco seasoning instead of the Everything Bagel mix. Yum!
  8. Air fryer. Yes, you can bake this goodness in your air fryer. Set it at 350℉ (175℃) and air fry for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Tips and Tricks

  1. Chilling the dough first makes it easier to work with.
  2. Arrange your crescent dough-wrapped dogs far enough apart so they have enough room to rise.
  3. This pig-in-a-blanket recipe delivers a gorgeous addition to a breakfast charcuterie board.
  4. Line your baking pan with a sheet of parchment paper for easy cleanup.

Make-Ahead, Serving, and Storage Instructions

You can always serve these tasty delights as an appetizer, quick snack, or light lunch. And they make a wonderful make-ahead, so make a big batch. Freeze and bake them when you have guests or get a craving. 😉

Place leftover crescent dogs in any clean, dry, airtight container or freezer-safe resealable bag. They’ll last in the fridge for up to 3 days or the freezer for 2-3 months.

Microwave for 2-3 minutes or until warm. Or place the mini crescent dogs on a lined baking sheet and loosely cover them with foil. Bake them in a preheated 325℉/163℃ oven for 8-10 minutes or until hot. If frozen, bake them for 15-20 minutes at 325℉/163℃.

    1. It is used to brush t pastry before apply the topping . This gives the pastry a golden, glossy finish and helps with browning. Thanks

These were good, but I was confused as to what sauces to use where. Is the brushing sauce used on the inside and outside, and the honey mustard sauce to be used for dipping? In the recipe it is not clear.

Yes the brushing sauce is the one you use for brushing inside and out. The dipping sauce is what you use to serve the pigs in the blanket with .
