Who wouldn’t love potatoes? Aside from its health benefits and delicious buttery flavor, I love its versatility when it comes to cooking.  

Imagine… you can boil it, fry it, mash it, add it on an omelet, make it a side dish, or even as a main dish! 

And it’s not only me who loves potatoes so much, but my whole family as well! This dish is basically just fried potatoes and onions seasoned with a dash of my homemade Creole Seasoning, salt, and pepper. That’s it!

No matter how simple this dish is tho, it became one of the most requested pan-fried potatoes recipe here at home! And you’ll know why.

Which Potato is Good for Frying?

Potatoes have different varieties and starch content level. Choosing what’s best depends on how you’ll be using them. For frying, I highly suggest you’d go with Russet potatoes. They just crisp well when fried, without drying out on the inside.

But of course, if you don’t have it on hand, feel free to use Yukon gold, red potatoes, or basically what’s readily available in your pantry.  Although they may not be as crisp as the Russets, they’ll turn out fine. Don’t fret it out, friends.

Recipe Ingredients

Since all we want is an easy-breezy morning, you won’t need many ingredients to dig into this scrumptious simple meal. I bet that your pantry and fridge is ready whenever you want to make one. All you need are just S-I-X (6) simple ingredients. YASSS!

  • Russet Potatoes 
  • Cooking Oil  (or bacon fat)
  • Butter 
  • Onion
  • Creole Seasoning 
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Recipe Variations

Since potatoes are like a blank canvass, you can always add or change the way I seasoned these fried potatoes. You can check out other variations below or make your own! 

  • Want it to be more flavorful? You are always welcome to use bacon grease instead of cooking oil. Using bacon fat infuses that smokey flavor into the potatoes. Or go all out by adding bacon bits, too! 
  • Don’t have Creole seasoning? You can still spice up this humble food by sprinkling some chili pepper flakes or cayenne pepper. 
  • If you’re a huge cheese lover, go ahead and add some shredded cheddar or any of your favorite cheese.
  • Top it with sliced green onions for added fresh bites.

How to Prepare the Potatoes? 

Preparing these lovelies is easy. All you need to do is to scrub and peel the potatoes and dice them into ½ to ¾-inch cubes. (You can even ask your younger sibling or teenage child to wash them for you. It will not only make the task much easier, but it can also be a good time to bond!)

Place the diced potatoes in a saucepan with water, add 1/2 tsp of salt and bring it to a boil then reduce heat to simmer. Potatoes should be cooked after 5 to 7 minutes.

Then drain the water and simmer for another minute or until the remaining water had evaporated. This extra step will yield a crisp exterior when fried.

How To Make Southern Fried Potatoes
Scrub potatoes, peel, and clean and cut them into cubes about ½ -¾ cubes.  Place in a saucepan with water and about ½ teaspoon salt, you may add more later on. Bring to a boil over high heat and then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook until just the edges are tender, about 5-7 minutes. Potatoes should be almost cooked. Drain water and simmer for about 1 minute or until water has evaporated.

Heat oil, butter, or bacon fat in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high until simmering. lace potatoes in a single layer in the skillet; cook, turning each piece occasionally until potatoes are browned about 10 minutes. After the potatoes are browned, add in onion and Creole seasoning. Stir for about 2-3 minutes. Adjust seasonings to taste and serve.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pound Russet Potatoes , (chopped into 1/2″-3/4″ cubes)
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil , (or bacon fat)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ½ medium onion
  • 1-2 teaspoons Creole Seasoning
  • salt and Pepper to taste
