What is Passion Fruit Juice? What does it taste like? If you haven’t tried it yet, well you’re missing out!
For starters, it is a juice made from passion fruit’s flesh, pulps, and seeds, using either a blender or food processor.
And like any other juice made from tropical fruits, it is sweet with citrusy tanginess and tartness, the perfect combination for a refreshing drink.
Just add water, Immaculate Bites Homemade Simple Syrup, and ice cubes, and you’re all set to enjoy the passion fruit drink recipe.
It’s really simple and super easy to make. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy this fruity drink while receiving its health benefits. Yey for a double win! 😉
Why is it called Passion Fruit?
It is called Passion fruit because it comes from a species of Passion Flower or Passiflora. It is also known as Chinola in the Dominican Republic and Maracuya in Spanish. The color of the fruit varies from purple, yellow, red, and green.
The name is also related to the Crucifixion of Christ and His resurrection, hence the name “flor das cinco Chagas” or flower of five wounds.
This name was given by the missionaries in Brazil while introducing Christianity to the indigenous inhabitants through their educational aid, back in 1700.
What is Passion Fruit Good For?
Although Passion Fruit is composed of 73% water, the fruit contains antioxidants and is also packed with nutrients such as vitamin C, which is good for the immune system, and vitamin A, which is essential for eyesight, and skin.
This fruit also contains potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, phosphorus, niacin, and vitamin B-6, which are important in our body’s daily needs.
The pulp and seeds are also very high in fiber. Other health benefits of this fruit include:
- Boosts Immune System
- Improves Blood Flow
- Reduces Stress
- Improves Bowel Movement
- Improve Insulin Sensitivity
- Aids in Lowering Cholesterol
- Normalizes Blood Pressure
- Reduces Anxiety

How to Cut Passion Fruit?
I cut mine crosswise, by slicing the top off. This way you can get all the juice, flesh, and seeds without making a mess.
You can use a spoon and eat the flesh directly. Especially if you can’t wait to taste the mouthwatering fruit. You can also cut it crosswise from stem to bottom. But you need to move fast so the juice and seeds won’t leak.
Passion Fruit Juice Recipe
Not only this healthy juice drink is easy to make but the ingredients are pretty basic they are always available at home. Erm, except for Passion Fruit. 😉
- Passion Fruit – you’ll be needing about 2 cups of puree with seeds and 1 cup without seeds. The seeds are actually rich in fiber so it’s really best to keep them. Plus, they are tastier with the seeds and they also add texture to this refreshing drink.
- Water – add water so you can blend and crush the passion fruit easily. Also, to dilute and lessen the thickness of your juice.
- Simple Syrup – see Immaculate Bites Simple Syrup recipe here. I prefer adding syrup because it is smoother and has absolutely no sugary grains. I also find it easier to work with when making juice.
- Ice Cubes – any juice is more refreshing with the addition of ice cubes. However, adding too much might make your passion fruit juice too watery.
- Mint Leaves – are usually added to beverages as garnish. The mint flavor also adds a cool sensation to the mouth making the beverage more refreshing.
Recipe Substitutions
Obviously, you can’t replace Passion Fruit with any fruit you prefer because this is a passion fruit drink recipe after all. 😉 But here are some simple sugar syrup alternatives you can use:
- Honey – has a smooth texture like simple sugar syrup and is the best option if you are on a paleo diet.
- Sucralose, Erythritol, or Monkfruit – are sugar-free sweeteners you can use if you’re watching your blood sugar level.
- Granulated Sugar – works fine as well if you want to skip on making the simple sugar syrup. Just make sure to dissolve the sugar completely.
Recipe Variations
Level up your healthy drink by making Frozen Passion Fruit Drink or Smoothie. And to make it even healthier and tastier, you can add more tropical fruits like:
- Mango – the natural sweetness from ripe mangoes perfectly balance the citrusy tanginess of the chinola.
- Pineapple – the combination of sweetness and tanginess are flavors you don’t wanna miss out on your favorite smoothie.
- Lemon – add more tartness, why not? Lemon and Chinola complement each other well and adds interesting layers of flavor to the concoction, even to cakes and pastries.
- Orange – you’ll never go wrong in adding sweet orangey flavor to your passion fruit juice or smoothie.
Aside from juice, you can also make salad, cakes, and pastries with Passion Fruit. And if you have extra passion fruits to spare, you can also try my Passion Fruit Pudding Cake recipe here. 🙂
