Finding Food with the letter V is a bit challenging for me. All I can think of are my favorite desserts, Vanilla Ice Cream and Vitumbua. That’s how much I love dessert, obviously.
So, I cheated a little and did a quick research. Surprisingly, the food names that start with V came from different parts of the world. India, France, Germany, Australia, and Brazil to name a few.
Are you ready for a quick virtual food world tour? Let’s get started! 😉
Brunch
Is actually the first food beginning with V that comes to my mind.
Also known as Frankfurters in Europe, it is longer and thinner than the American Vienna Sausage but with similar taste and texture.
Made of pork and beef meat in an edible casing and then smoked at a low temperature.
2. Velveeta
Velveeta is a popular brand name of processed cheese, similar to American cheese.
It melts nicely and smoothly making it an excellent choice for dips, Mac and Cheese, nachos, tacos, and even burgers.
3. Vada Pav
A popular street food starting with V originated in India. Vada Pav is like a burger that is made up of a bun called Pav with a deep-fried potato dumpling filling.
The potato dumpling is a mashed potato seasoned with garlic, turmeric, mustard seeds, and chopped chillis. Could there be any better than that?
4. Vichyssoise
Vi-chy-ssoise. Okay, say that one more time.
It may sound like a tongue-twister, but this soup here is a simple thick soup usually made with pureed leeks and potatoes and can be made creamier by adding heavy cream.
Traditionally, Vichyssoise is served cold but can be served warm as well. So good with a hearty crusty bread!
5. Vetkoek
Also known as Fat Cake, a South African fried dough bread made with cake flour and yeast.
It has a crispy exterior with a soft and fluffy center filled with savory and delicious minced curry.
Dinner
6. Vatapa
A famous Afro-Brazilian dish traditionally served with rice. It is a creamy seafood dish that is a blend of stale bread, coconut milk, oil, peanuts or cashews, and shrimp.
Chicken and cod are sometimes used as an alternative. Yum yum!
7. Vermicelli
Vermicelli is a type of pasta made with durum wheat flour. It’s thinner compared to spaghetti but in Italy, it’s actually thicker.
Meanwhile, in Asian countries, it is a type of rice noodle often used in several dishes like pho, stir-fry noodles, or salad.
Want to try it yourself? Check out my Ants Climbing a Tree recipe using Vermicelli.
8. Vindaloo
Just one look and you’ll know it’s bursting with flavors!
This popular Indian curry dish is heavily spiced with garam masala, paprika, and turmeric, and often tastes spicy and fiery hot because of the added chilies.
It contains meat like beef, mutton, pork, chicken, and seafood. And depending on your diet, you can also make it vegetarian.
9. Velvet Beans
Like most beans, Velvet Beans are also rich in protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and minerals like Calcium, Potassium, and Magnesium.
Though you need to be extra careful when handling these beans because they can irritate your skin.
Sides and Appetizers
10. Vol-Au-Vent
A dish originated in France, Vol-au-Vent is a small hollow puff pastry (like a small bowl) stuffed with chicken or fish in creamy and savory fillings.
This Vol-Au-Vent is sure one of the interesting snacks that start with V that I reaaally want to try.
11. Vegetables
This list won’t be complete without this. One of the main sources of human and animal food, vegetables can be leafy, a root crop, fruit of a plant, and a seed.
They are rich in vitamins, minerals, nutrients, and all things healthy. Need I say more? 😉
Feel free to try my Vegetable Soup and Vegetable Samosas. 😉
Desserts
12. Vitumbua
Another food that starts with V that I love eating for snacks. It is like a donut-pancake made with coconut milk, coconut flakes, rice, yeast, and sugar.
Don’t forget to top it off with Immaculate Bites Caramel Sauce for a more pleasurable snacking experience. Mmmm-mmmm!
13. Vanilla Ice Cream
The best-selling ice cream flavor of all time! Since it’s creamy and plain, it goes well with almost any kind of dessert. Always the ideal choice as a topping for brownies, pies, and smoothies.
14. Vla
Vla is a Dutch dessert very similar to a custard that is made from milk, eggs, corn starch, and sugar.
It’s smooth and creamy and can be enjoyed with different flavors like chocolate, caramel, or fresh fruits like strawberries and blueberries. This is hard to pass up!
Fruits
15. Valencia Orange
A popular citrus fruit named after Valencia, Spain, and available during the summer season.
It is perfect for making juice because it is juicier, and has a balanced sweet-citrusy tart flavor. Aside from juice, it is best for marmalade as well.
Seasoning and Flavoring
16. Vanilla Extract
Often used as a flavoring to enhance the flavor of cakes, pastries, frostings, pudding, and custard.
Did you know that it’s actually easy to make your own vanilla extract? The best part is, it only needs 2 ingredients – vanilla beans, and good quality vodka or rum.
17. Vinegar
Vinegar can be used as a preservative and often used to add sourness to a dish or used as a salad dressing like in this Vinegar Coleslaw.
And if you’re a clean freak, you can use it as a natural cleaning agent and even as a fabric conditioner. Pretty brilliant, huh?
18. Voatsiperifery
It’s a very rare spice from a berry that grows on Madagascar Island. Visually, it’s almost the same as the black pepper but not spicy. You’d get hooked with its rustic and fragrant smell that adds sweetness and freshness to your dish.
19. Vegemite
And of course, let’s not forget Aussie’s very own – vegemite!
A thick and dark brown, vegan and halal food spread from Australia, made from brewer’s yeast extract with added various vegetables and spice.
It tastes mildly bitter, malty, salty with an umami flavor similar to bouillon. It can also be used as an added flavoring for meat at pasta dishes.
I hope you enjoyed our quick world tour of food that begins with V. They all looked enticing and scrumptious which makes me want to try them all! So, what food that starts with V you want to try first? 😉
