When do you usually eat fries? The first word that comes to my mind is hamburgers. I made smoked hamburgers and these Cajun fries at our last backyard picnic, and they were a huge hit.
My son considers it a big treat when we go out for hamburgers and fries. And I have to admit that Five Guys Cajun fries are tempting. But as much as I enjoy eating out with my family, I love making homemade french fries even more.
What Are Cajun Fries?
Cajun fries is another name for french fries spiced up with my favorite spice mix. Let’s just say that they’re amazing Cajun french fries. If you love spicy, you’ve just found your next mouthwatering addiction.
Recipe Ingredients
- Potatoes – Russet potatoes are ideal for frying and baking. However, frozen french fries work if you’re looking for convenience.
- Cornstarch prevents the potatoes from sticking together during baking and contributes to the amazing crispiness.ng baking.
- Oil – Butter and olive oil create the perfect balance for crispy baked fries.
- Cajun Seasoning – Store-bought and homemade both work great. Smoked paprika, thyme, onion, and garlic powder deliver a deliciously quick sub, or try my homemade Cajun Creole seasoning.
How to Make Cajun Fries
Prep the Potatoes
- Preheat Oven – Prepare the oven and preheat it to 425℉/218℃.
- Prep the Potatoes – Scrub potatoes, then cut them into the desired shape. The thinner you cut them, the faster they’ll cook. But make sure they are a uniform size for even cooking. (Photos 1-2) (If using frozen potato fries, skip to step 6.)
- Soak the potatoes in a bowl of cold water for 30 minutes to eliminate excess starch. Drain and dry. (Photos 3-4)
Bake
- Coat – Mix the potatoes with cornstarch until thoroughly combined in a large bowl. Shake off the excess. Add the melted butter and oil and toss to combine. Then season with homemade Creole seasoning and salt.
- Arrange your potatoes in a single layer over a baking sheet. Depending on how many fries you’re baking, you may have to use two sheets.
- Bake the fries for 25-35 minutes. Flip them every 15 minutes with a spatula until they’re evenly browned and crispy, according to your preference. After 25 minutes, check on them every 5 minutes.
- Serve – Allow the fries to cool slightly, and serve immediately with ketchup or your favorite seasoning.
Recipe Variations
- Sweet Potato Fries make a great sub for regular potato fries. And they have a slightly sweeter taste that contrasts well with the Cajun seasoning.
- Yams: The true yam (not sweet potatoes) are also delicious. They’re similar in taste and texture to potatoes. Yum!
- Carrots: Naturally sweet and delicious, not to mention nutritious, carrots fries are also a great snack alternative.
- Deep Fried: If you want that rich deep-fried taste, heat some peanut oil in a deep pan and fry them. I won’t tell.😉
- Air Fryer: Yes, you can cook these up in an air fryer. Prep and season your fries, then cook them at 375℉/190℃ for about 15 minutes. Check for crispness and cook longer if necessary.
Tips and Tricks
- Pat your potatoes dry with a paper towel and cut them into equally sized strips so they cook evenly.
- To help them get crispy, arrange them in an even layer with space between them without piling up on each other.
- Toss the fries and the seasonings until the potatoes are evenly coated before sticking them in the oven.
Make-Ahead Instructions
Save time in the kitchen by doing make-ahead actions. Cut as many potatoes as needed and store them completely submerged in cold water in the fridge. You can also make homemade Cajun seasoning for now and in the future. Store it in a glass jar away from light and heat, and it should last 6 months to a year.
Serving and Storage Instructions
When it first comes out of the oven, it can be tempting to dive right in but wait. It’s better to let your fries slightly cool before serving.
Refrigerate leftover fries for 2-3 days in an airtight container. You can reheat them for about 10 minutes on a baking sheet in a 350°F (175°C) oven.
FAQs
Regular fries are traditionally salted and served. While they’re absolutely delicious, Cajun fries take it up a notch with cayenne, oregano, garlic, onion, and paprika.
We associate Cajun food with spicy heat, but that’s not necessarily the case. The flavor usually comes from garlic, onion, paprika, and oregano. While cayenne pepper is ever-present, you can adjust the heat level to your preference.
Is that a trick question? I’ve never spoken to anyone who doesn’t like them. If you enjoy spicy food and love french fries, then Cajun fries are a must-try.
What to Serve With Cajun Fries
Cajun fries are a must with hamburgers, salmon burgers, chicken sandwiches, and fish sandwiches. And sauces like remoulade and ranch dressing are great for dipping.
