Beef Tips and Rice – Flavorful, hearty, and satisfying, this beef tips and rice recipe is a comfort food classic. They’re easy and delicious for a busy weeknight meal that won’t disappoint. 😍
We all have long, unforgiving work days that leave us wanting to avoid the kitchen. Whenever I have one of those days, all I want is effortless and comforting food. And these beef tips are at the top of my list for those days.
Accessible and inexpensive ingredients are another reason beef tips served over steaming hot rice is my go-to recipe. We can sit down to dinner in less than an hour, making it a family favorite as well. But enough talking; try this recipe for yourself to experience how deliciously convenient it can be.😉
What Are Beef Tips?
Well, they’re beef. 🤭 Beef tips are typically from the tenderloin, sirloin, chuck roast, flank steak, and round. They’re cheaper because the butcher trimmed off all the tips for pretty roasts and steaks. But they’re oh-so-delicious when you simmer them in brown gravy for 50-60 minutes.
While some argue that stew meat is not beef tips because stew meat is tougher, I use either. Sirloin tips do cook faster. But if you want to let it simmer all day in a crock pot, stew meat is the way to go.
Recipe Ingredients
- Stew Meat – Cut your choice of meat into cubes. You can cut as small or large as you prefer, but go for bite-sized pieces. Get creative with lamb, goat, or venison for this recipe.
- Seasoning -Make it simple with salt, pepper, and Creole seasoning.
- Oil – Olive oil and butter sear your beef to brown perfection. They also create intensely flavorful drippings for an incredible gravy.😋
- Aromatics – Onion, garlic, and thyme deliver the classic stew flavorings.
- White Wine -A delicious way to deglaze your pan and scrape all those incredible drippings right into the gravy.
- Gravy -Beef broth, bouillon powder, Worcestershire sauce, water, flour, salt, and pepper are the ideal addition to the already awesome pan drippings.
- Cooked Rice – Do I even need to explain? Seriously, what are beef tips without rice?
How to Make Beef Tips and Rice
- Heat the olive oil and butter in a large Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat.
- Season the beef with salt, pepper, and Creole seasoning (if using). Add stew meat and sear until browned on all sides, about two minutes per side. (Photos 1-3)
- Saute Aromatics – Add the onion and cook until softened, 7-8 minutes. Then add your garlic and thyme and cook for another minute. (Photos 4-5)
- Deglaze with white wine and let it cook down for about a minute.
- The Gravy – Add the beef broth, bouillon powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring it to a boil, reduce heat to low, then simmer for 30-40 minutes or until the meat is tender. (Photo 6)
- Thickener – In a small bowl, whisk together the flour and water. Add the flour mixture to the pot, then continue stirring and simmering until the sauce thickens (about two minutes). Adjust the consistency with water or broth and the seasoning to taste. (Photos 7-8)
- Serve over beef tips and gravy with rice, and enjoy! 😉
Recipe Variations
- Add cream of mushroom soup: After deglazing the pan with wine, add the cream of mushroom soup with the beef broth. The result will be a creamy, flavorful meal perfect for a weeknight dinner.
- Broccoli it up: Are you trying to sneak veggies in for the tykes? Here’s your chance because broccoli goes great with beef tips! Add broccoli about 5 minutes before the gravy is ready so it doesn’t get mushy. When you let the beef tips rest, the residual heat will finish the job.
- Rice swap: Enjoy beef tips and gravy over mashed potatoes instead of rice. Oh yeah!
- Slow Cooker Beef Tips – You read that right! Sear the beef, deglaze the pan, and add all the ingredients to your crockpot. Set it on low for 7-8 hours and come home to perfectly cooked beef tips, cutting your dinner prep by almost an hour. 😁
Tips and Tricks
- Make sure you get a good sear on your beef tips to seal in the juices and flavor.
- Use tougher but more flavorful beef. Follow the recipe, but simmer it for 2-3 hours. That’s so the connective tissue breaks down for an awesome melt-in-your-mouth stew.
- If you need a gluten-free version, make a cornstarch slurry instead. Mix two tablespoons of cornstarch into 4 tablespoons of cold water and add it to your gravy instead of the flour.
Make-Ahead Instructions
