French Chocolate Silk Pie – light and decadent chocolate filling in a delicious flaky crust, then topped with a generous amount of homemade whipped cream. Your tasty dessert fix fit for any season. Every bite feels like floating on a cloud of pure deliciousness. The best part about this is that it’s served chilled! No need to reheat.
Pies are a potluck regular and I really get excited whenever someone brings over a pan of this delicious dessert.
One pie that really stuck in my heart is the French silk pie. It is so smooth and silky that my taste buds feel like royalty! Making it from scratch isn’t a problem either, so skip the store-bought pies because we’re going to make this homemade recipe from scratch.
Honestly, the thought of using raw eggs made me a little nervous, so I lightly cook them for a safer version.
The texture is not harmed and is just as smooth as the silk in its name. If you’re a chocoholic like me, this will do more than satisfy your soul; it will give you a heavenly high.
This recipe is so super easy there is no need to even look at the freezer dessert section. Well, you can, but there’s nothing there that tops this sweet deliciousness.
French Chocolate Silk Pie Recipe
French chocolate silk pie is named this way because of the smooth and rich texture of the pie filling.
The original bakers of this decadent pie used pudding. But the problem with pudding is that it’s too heavy, and it was a little different between their specialty and a regular pie.
So, they developed the filling by switching the pudding out with it a mousse, which gave it its luxurious silky texture.
A lot of different variations came from the mousse. Traditionally the flavor was chocolate, but with creative home cooks such as you and me, the recipe developed into various different flavors and styles while staying true to its “smooth as French silk” quality.
The whipped cream was added as an optional topping and chocolate shavings gave it a light and flavorful personality.
Recipe Ingredients
- Homemade pie crust – The star that holds it all together distinguishes this recipe from a delicious mousse. You can make your own homemade pie crust with this recipe.
- Dark chocolate – Rich and decadent ingredient that makes this incredible pie what it is.
- Sugar – Sweeten up your life with this easy-to-find pantry staple.
- Eggs – This protein-rich ingredient contributes to a smooth, creamy, and light mousse.
- Vanilla extract – Deepen the flavor with this amazing liquid. If you’re not making your own homemade vanilla extract, you don’t know what you’re missing.
- Butter – Creamy fat adds creamy smoothness.
- Heavy cream – Whipped up in a frenzy, adds creamy lightness to this amazing pie.
- Powdered sugar – This is the best way to sweeten whipped cream because it’s not grainy but smooth.
- Homemade whipped cream – One of the most versatile toppings you can find. See my homemade whipped cream HERE.
Everything From Scratch
I always want to put an extra pinch of personality in all of my dishes, that’s why I opt using homemade ingredients.
This works perfectly for our easy French Silk Pie recipe because it’s just made of three easy parts we can easily make from scratch.
- Flaky pie crust
- Silky chocolate filling
- Heavenly whipped cream topping
Chocolate Silk Pie Filling
Easy to make and hard to forget, that’s what I always say about a good pie filling. Since this is dessert, we want it to be sweet! Yaay!
And personally, I think that chocolate always makes things sweeter. Simply add melted chocolate to your custard mixture and you’ll have an irresistibly flavorful filling.
However, if that’s how you roll, you can always try other pie filling flavors.
- The most basic you can use is plain vanilla. It’s actually good just the way it is, and when you combine it with the other ingredients, you’ll have an incredibly rich custard filling.
- Blueberry or strawberry extract gives you a fruity taste that goes great with different kinds of sweetness.
- Mix a bit of cinnamon to your filling to give it a sweet earthy spiciness.
- You can also add in bits of lemon zest to turn it into a perfect summer silk pie.
Chocolate is what makes this recipe extraordinary. The perfect combination and measurements in my filling set this dessert apart from the others. So live a little, it’s so easy and delicious.
Pie Crust
A good pie crust is essential to hold it all together. Don’t let the thought of making homemade pie crust scare you.
With only four ingredients (flour, salt, fat, and water), you have a nice dough that, when baked, would give you a flaky buttery shell that beautifully complements the sweet filling.
If you want to make this French chocolate silk pie even more special, you can try pie crust variations.
Crushed nuts add extra flavor to every flaky bite. Just make sure to adjust the moist ingredients.
Note: Too much liquid will give you a sticky dough; too little, and you’ll end up with a crumbly crust.
Butter is best, and I always use unsalted butter so I have better control over the amount of salt.
My delicious flaky pie crust is a versatile recipe that can be used for sweet or savory dishes.
Light & Fluffy Topping
For the fluffy topping, use an electric mixer at medium-high speed on a bowl of heavy cream and slowly add the powdered sugar until you can form soft peaks.
Then a smidgen of homemade vanilla extract makes it even more drool-worthy. The best whipped cream for this French silk chocolate pie is your own Homemade Whipped Cream.😉
Best Ways to Shave Chocolate
It wouldn’t be a French chocolate silk pie without the actual chocolatey goodness. You’re gonna want to add a bit of garnish to your dessert to make it more authentic. Also, to add to the dish’s rich texture, shaved chocolate does the job perfectly.
Here are a few techniques I use to give me those delicious chocolaty bits.
Cheese Grater
Cheese graters aren’t just for cheese anymore. The easiest way to get even shaves of chocolate is to use this useful tool.
Just grab a block of your favorite chocolate and start grating. A great tip for better quality of shavings is to grate in one direction. You’ll end up with longer shaves with minimal melting.
Peelers
Vegetable peelers are amazing shavers, too. This is the perfect tool to use if you want to have thinner and wider pieces. Although this technique would be more tedious, it will give you a melt-in-your-mouth chocolatey sensation.
Knife
Lastly, you can use your trusty knife. Simply drag the sharp side of your knife over the surface of your chocolate bar and you’ll start to see uneven shavings come from your bar.
These are good for when you want to add a more rustic look to your French chocolate silk pie.
How Long Does French Silk Pie Stay Good?
If you keep the pie refrigerated, it’ll be good for about two to four days. But the whipped cream might set during its time in the fridge.
Make sure to cover it away from air moisture as this might make your pie crust stale.
Making Ahead Instructions
If you’re just preparing your ingredients today but plan to make the whole pie for another day, follow these tips to make your baking life easier.
Freeze the Pie Dough. The best way to make pie crust ahead of time is to make the dough, seal it in an airtight bag and freeze it until you are ready.
Thawing. Just leave it at room temperature until it is soft enough that you can leave a dent when you press onto it. This should still be good for around a week or so
Refrigerating the Filling. If you’ve already made your filling, you can store it in an airtight container or a Ziplock bag and leave it in the fridge. This will last for around two to four days.
Note: Because this recipe contains eggs, you should be extra careful not to let any moisture in as this might hasten the spoilage.
Making the topping. For the topping, it is best to make your homemade whipped cream on the day that you’ll use it as it may set in the fridge and become watery which will just spoil the whole cream.

How to Make French Chocolate Silk Pie

- Melt chocolate – To melt chocolate, microwave in 15-second intervals stirring every time until melted. (Photo 1)
Make the Mousse
- Cook eggs – In a medium saucepan, combine sugar and eggs until well combined. Cook over low heat, constantly stirring until sauce passes back of spoon test. - Finishing touches – Pour into pie shell and refrigerate for at least 8 hours. Top with homemade whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Serve cold. (Photos 13 & 14)
