Hamburger Steak and Gravy – a satisfying family-favorite meal that uses less ingredients without compromising the taste. Made with ground beef steak and soaked in an onion mushroom gravy that is to-die for! Pure comfort food that comes easily together!
Perhaps the most crucial every day question that all wives and moms would face throughout their lives is, “What’s for dinner?”. If you’re a meal prepper, bless your heart, but if you’re more like me who usually lives in the moment and just wings it, bless our hearts, too. 😂
I tried to be a meal prepper with all those labels and food storage in the fridge, but it just wasn’t me. So most of the time, I just kinda wing it. Simple, easy and tasty are my three favorite food terms when it comes to family meals.
This Hamburger Steak and Gravy (or as some would call it Salisbury steak and gravy) definitely fits the bill!
It’s one of those easy meals that you can squeeze in your weekly rotation and nobody will complain. It’s made with seasoned ground beef, breadcrumbs and eggs mixture formed into thick hamburger patties/steaks and then pan-fried.
Don’t start with me on the sauce. It’s a savory onion mushroom gravy sauce that is sooo lethal. You’d unconsciously pour it all over whatever happens to be on the dining table. Rice, mashed potatoes, peas – you name it. It’s so perfect with almost anything!
You see right there, I also added this good ole Southern Fried Corn on the side for an added texture to my meal. Oh boy, it was a fantastic meal that soothes the soul!
You can go as simple as this or sneak in some veggies in the hamburger steaks like bell pepper, carrots, potatoes or celery to make your kids eat veggies. They won’t complain at all. And you can even stop right there and just pair these bad boys here with ketchup. It sure works, too!
But of course, this Hamburger Steak is utterly perfect when paired with gravy ’cause dads and hubbies like it that way.
So if you’re looking for a great family weeknight meal OR for this coming Father’s Day celebration that is no-fuss and comes together in no time, you sure need to add this to your recipe box. And don’t worry, I have loads of special and hearty recipe ideas for you to choose from to impress all the Pops out there. 😉
Happy Father’s Day!

Tips and Notes:
- You got to make your patties large and thick as they’ll shrink and puff a little as they cook.
- Don’t worry if hamburger steaks are not completely cooked through. They will finish cooking in the gravy.
- You may replace the ground beef with ground pork, turkey or venison. Your call!
- As always, if you want to go with the easiest route, you can use frozen beef patties to go along with the gravy recipe.
- If you’re making the beef mixture from scratch, you can let them sit in the fridge for a bit to firm up before frying.
- Double the gravy recipe if you want more of it to top your rice or mashed potatoes. 😉
- You may leave out the mushrooms and just go with onions if you’re not a big fan.
How to Make Hamburger Steak
In a large bowl, add ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, pepper, salt, grated onion and minced garlic.
Using your hands, gently combine until it’s fully mixed. Then divide into about 4-6 portions.
Lightly flatten the patties – set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, broth and water. Set aside. Heat a lightly oiled skillet or pan on medium -high heat. Cook patties for 2 minutes each side or until just browned.
Remove patties and set aside. Add about 2 tablespoons butter, followed by mushrooms, onion, thyme, garlic, Worcestershire sauce and creole seasoning to the skillet, and sauté 6 minutes or until tender.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour broth and water. Set aside

Return patties and drippings to skillet. Salt and pepper if desired. Cover, reduce heat to low, and simmer 8 to 10 minutes, adjust with more stock or water for desired thickness.

Imma, In the nutritional stats the sodium reads “Sodium 29312mg”. Did the system have a breakdown? It can’t possibly be right! lol Any thoughts on its accuracy? Kate
imma africanbites says
Hi, Kate. Thanks for bringing it up. The recent plug in updates could have messed it up. I already made the corrections tho. Thank you.

Hi my husband has a heart problem so not we are on the dash diet. I know 1 teaspoon of salt is
2,325 mg of sodium. I know you have to add sodium from everything in your recipe. This is not a good recipe for someone watching there sodium intake. My husband is allowed to have 500 MG sodium per meal per day. The dash Diet is boring so I keep looking for ways to change great recipes but make them taste great. I do not think I can make this one
Michelle M. says
Deborah,
Most of the sodium in this recipe can be significantly reduced. I have to watch my salt intake as well, I know how hard it can be sometimes.
Swapping the ingredients out for their reduced/low salt/sodium versions and using salt substitute, I was able to get the sodium down to 297 mg per serving..and if you used unsalted butter instead of salted it goes down to 276 mg.
I don’t know if it will retain the information for long, but here is the recipe with the reduced sodium info.
Oh..and This ingredient list does not include the mushrooms, I’m not a fan.
