Chocolate gravy and biscuits -Thick, rich, and luscious chocolate topping or dip that gives a smooth glazy finish to your regular biscuits or any baked treat. You’ll surely be so addicted to this kitchen staple that you might just put it on everything. I won’t blame you, I would too if I were you.
Chocolate, for me, is a fundamental essential for any sweet treat. I especially like the bold and true flavors of this ingredient over drinks and my favorite treats. You can even make these better with bits of chocolate, too. Chocolate over chocolate? You wouldn’t have to ask me twice.
This type of chocolate sauce is often seen as a kid food, well it does bring nostalgic memories. However, once you taste the smooth river of sweet chocolatey goodness, you’ll definitely say it’s a treat for all ages. The best part about this is that it only takes a few ingredients to make.
What is Chocolate Gravy?
This addicting treat isn’t really a mystery among our southern friends because it roots out from their flavorful culture. Contrary to its name, it’s not actually gravy! The name originates from the southern cooking method of sauce making in a skillet.
Basically, any sauce made in a skillet was gravy. It didn’t matter if it was sweet or savory as long as it’s from the skillet, it’s gravy!
Chocolate Gravy vs Chocolate Fudge Sauce
Now I know most of you might mistake today’s recipe with chocolate fudge sauce, I don’t blame you. They do sound alike and, for the untrained, might taste the same. However, there is one difference that you can’t miss out on; thickness in consistency.
You don’t need professional training to know the difference between the two. Hot chocolate fudge is thicker and heavy and is often used as a filling, topping, or spread. You can normally see this in donuts or as an ice cream topping
Chocolate Gravy, on the other hand, is a lighter and more pourable sauce that has a glazy finish. It has a rich consistency which is great for topping treats because it’s thick enough to not be absorbed immediately. This is great especially if you don’t like soggy biscuits.
Recipe Ingredients and Variations
It only takes a few ingredients to make your baked treat extra awesome. This awesome chocolatey mixture is made of a handful of simple ingredients. You won’t even have to exert much effort to make this delicious chocolate sauce. All you’ll need for this recipe are:
- Cocoa Powder
- All-purpose Flour
- Granulated Sugar
- Salt
- Evaporated Milk (Check this homemade recipe HERE)
- Unsalted Butter
- Vanilla Extract (This easy recipe should help you make your own from scratch.)
Substitutions
- All-purpose flour is one key ingredient in this southern recipe. However, if you don’t have this at home, try checking your pantry for corn starch. It’s the easiest alternative for this ingredient that won’t do much change in the flavor. The ratio for this is 1:1.
- Shortening such as margarine is a great substitute for butter. The role of this ingredient is to enrich the flavor of the chocolate in the mixture. The fat content in both ingredients will react the same way whichever you choose. Every cup of margarine is equal to a cup of butter.
- Honey is a healthier sweetener that gives us a richer taste for the mixture. It’s more concentrated than regular syrups so you’ll only need ¾ cups of honey for every cup of sugar. Agave can also be a substitute for this ingredient.
- Coconut milk can be a vegan substitute for your evaporated milk. There will be a slight change in flavor but the richness of the chocolate will surely be spot on! No need for conversions for this one because 1-part coconut milk is equal to 1-part of evaporated milk.
Storage and Make-Ahead Instructions
This tip will surely save you time! When you reach that perfect thickness in the consistency, wait for it to cool down to room temperature. Place the mixture in an airtight container and place it in a cool and draft-free place. This will last for about two weeks refrigerated.
How to Reheat
- First, place it in a microwave for 15 to 30 seconds or until it’s hot enough to serve.
- The second method involves manually heating it on top of a stove. Place the mixture on a skillet on medium heat and continuously stir. Do this to avoid any burnt sauce that could make our mixture bitter. Turn off the heat once the consistency starts to loosen up.
- Lastly, if you accidentally froze your chocolate sauce, use a double broiler to melt the mixture. This uses indirect heat by placing the heating pan slightly submerged in boiling water. This perfectly melts the chocolate mixture without messing with the consistency.
Ways to Serve It
This recipe is versatile when it comes to serving different dishes. In the southern states, this mixture is mainly used as a topping for these Flaky Homemade Biscuits or it’s bigger counterpart – Cathead Biscuits (recipe coming SOON). Once you pour this mixture on your treats, get ready to be swoon over with chocolate-covered biscuits!
This southern chocolate gravy can also be used as a dip. If your biscuits are bite-sized such as these Angel Biscuits, you can submerge them in the sauce. This will give you a total chocolatey experience!
